What actually happens
Three things stand between you and a reply
None of them involve a person reading carefully. Understanding the order they happen in is most of the job.
It gets converted
Your PDF or Word file is turned into plain text. A two-column layout gets read straight across and interleaves into nonsense. Text boxes, headers and images are often dropped entirely. If you exported an image, it reads as blank.
It gets searched
Recruiters filter the converted text by keyword: a language, a framework, a degree, a city. Skills you have but never named are invisible here, and so is anything trapped in a graphic.
It gets skimmed
If it surfaces, someone gives the top third a few seconds. An objective saying you are hardworking and a block listing your father's name both burn that time without telling them anything.

FAQ
Reasonable questions
Is this the same software companies use?
No, and anything claiming otherwise is guessing. Applicant tracking systems are commercial products that differ from vendor to vendor, and none of them publish their scoring.
What HireReady does is reproduce the part that is not secret: converting your file to text, which is exactly what every one of those systems has to do first. The rest of the checks are conventions recruiters and career services broadly agree on.
Does a good score mean I will get the interview?
No. The score measures whether your resume presents your work clearly and survives being parsed. It cannot measure whether your experience fits the role, and no employer will ever see this number.
Think of it as proofreading, not prediction. It removes the reasons you get filtered out for something other than your ability.
How do I know my resume is not being uploaded?
Check it directly. Open developer tools, switch to the Network tab, then choose your file. No request appears, because the parsing happens in your browser.
The stronger test: disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded, then run a resume through. It works, because there is no server to talk to.
Why does it say two columns are a problem? Mine looks good.
It probably does look good, to you. The issue is that text extraction generally works line by line across the full width of the page, so a sidebar gets spliced into the middle of your main content. Your skills end up interleaved with your job dates.
A single column is not more boring, it is just more robust. Save the layout work for a portfolio site, and link to it.
It flagged something that is genuinely fine for me.
Then ignore it. These are heuristics tuned for people applying to their first job, and they will occasionally be wrong for you. A career-changer with ten years of history has different rules, and two pages may be correct.
Every check explains its reasoning precisely so that you can disagree with it on purpose rather than by accident.
Why is it free?
Because it costs almost nothing to run. There is no server doing the analysis and no database storing anything, so hosting it is the price of serving a few static files.
It also started as a tool for students who were being told to pay for resume reviews that amounted to this checklist.
What happens to the text I paste?
It is kept in your tab's session storage so that a refresh does not lose your work, and it is deleted when you close the tab. "Clear" wipes it immediately. It is never transmitted.
